What changes is that the day bends around you: your address, your pace, your questions, and no second pickup on the other side of the city while you sit and wait.
Six departures here are sold that way, and they range from a three-hour walk between Chapinero coffee houses to a nine-hour day with a car, a bilingual guide and seven hours on one of the country's most-awarded estates.
Most private days include hotel pickup from any address in Bogota, and one takes travellers straight from El Dorado airport. On a 6:30 start that is the difference between a taxi across a dark city and walking out of your lobby.
Nobody waits for a late traveller and nobody hurries you through the wet mill because the group is drifting. If you want twenty minutes on fermentation you get twenty minutes.
The private car day runs in five languages — English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French — where a shared workshop is English by default. If you are travelling with family who do not share a language, that is not a small thing.
Two private departures ask for dietary requirements at booking. On a farm that cooks lunch for a group, being one party rather than six makes vegetarian or vegan food a question rather than a problem.

For two people a shared day is comfortably cheaper and loses very little. For four with children, or for anyone who dislikes waiting, the private version earns the difference.

Every private departure here includes transport, a guide and the estate visit. Most include lunch; the three-hour city workshop includes coffee at each stop and a savoury bite rather than a meal. None includes tips, and none includes what you buy at the farm.
What a private fare does not buy is a different farm. The same fincas take shared groups on other days, and the estate is not tidier because you arrived alone. If a specific estate is what you want, choose it first — the farms page sets out which departures reach which.
Price band: $60 for the three-hour city workshop, $94 to $164 for a private farm day with lunch and pickup, $659 for the nine-hour car-and-guide version of it. Duration: three hours at the short end, eight to nine at the long. Booking window: three to five days ahead, a week between June and August and over Christmas.

Solo travellers and couples, most of the time. A private fare buys exclusivity, and a party of one or two is paying full price for a car with empty seats in it. The shared farm days reach the same estates with the same guiding for less, and travellers on them consistently praise the company as part of the day.
Also anyone who wants the shortest, cheapest way in. That is a two-hour shared workshop in Chapinero at fifty dollars, and no private version of it exists at that price. If the cup rather than the car is the point, the tasting tours are where to look.
